What is a Patent Agent?

A patent agent is an individual who has passed the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) Patent Bar, and is registered with the USPTO to prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications on behalf of his or her clients

 

A patent agent has to have a degree in engineering or science. A patent agent also has to study the patent rules and the patent laws and how the patent office works.

 

They must take a very difficult examination become admitted to what’s called the patent bar. Once admitted to the patent bar, a patent agent is permitted legally to represent patent clients in preparing and filing patent applications and then prosecuting them through the examination process in the patent’s office to obtain an issue to patent.
